Technical Editing Services

My wife Sue and I offer copy/technical editing services. Fee: sliding scale. Sue’s educational background includes a B.S. in Natural Resource Conservation from the University of Connecticut and an M.S. in Environmental Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been working as a science writer and medical editor since 1979 with such nonprofit groups as the National Wildlife Federation, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and The Endocrine Society.

My experience includes copy editing the Lower Middle Klamath Watershed Analysis (USDA-FS, March 2003), Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Humboldt County, California (2005) and serving as guest editor of the Redwood Region Audubon Society’s Annual Children’s Issue of the Sandpiper newsletter (2004-present). Sue and I have collaborated on projects that include City of Fortuna General Plan Revision, the Arcata Marsh Bird Checklist, and the Four Seasons of Birding in Humboldt brochure.

Money is not our motivation for undertaking projects of this nature. Rather, it is our realization that writing projects often demand an interdisciplinary approach and a skill set that lies beyond the reach of many planners, scientists, and journalists. The desire to offer our services springs from an abiding passion to produce copy that not only “gets the science right,” but is grammatically correct, succinct, and easy to read.
